THE memorial to the Titanic's musicians - who famously played on while the ship went down - is the second to stand on this site.
The first was destroyed when the public library that stood on the corner of London Road and Cumberland Place was bombed in in the 1940 blitz of Southampton by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War.
The original memorial was unveiled inside the library in 1913 by the Mayor of Southampton, Harry Bowyer.
The replacement was unveiled in 1990 by surviving passengers from the ship, including Milvina Dean.
The memorial has the names of the band members inscribed on it along with the opening to Nearer My God to Thee, which is widely accepted as one of the songs they played that night.
However many suggest the band actually played what are known as 'rag tunes' in an attempt to keep up the spirits of crew and passengers as the ship slowly slipped into the Atlantic.
