AIR passengers across the south are facing major delays this morning after a Hampshire-based air traffic control centre reported “technical problems”.
NATS in Swanwick has been forced to restrict the number of aircraft flying across the region and those taking off from London airports while they battle to restore full operations.
Southampton Airport has already confirmed that four flights from the terminal have been delayed so far as a result of the problems.
A NATS spokesman said: “NATS is experiencing technical problems at our Swanwick control centre and we are working to restore full operations.
“This has not resulted in the closure of UK airspace or the suspension of all flights in or out the UK.
“However, to maintain safety NATS is restricting the number of aircraft flying across the south of England and those taking off from London airports. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause however our first priority will always be the safety of the flying public.
“NATS is taking every step to restore services and has contingency plans in place to minimise any disruption.
“More information will be released as it becomes available.”
A spokesman from Southampton Airport said four flights had been affected, including to Bergerac in France and Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
She said: “We are operating again but there may be some knock on delays. We are hoping to catch up during the day.
“Passengers with concerns should contact their airlines.”
