DETECTIVES have been given more time to question a man arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 20-year-old man from Gosport remains in custody at a police station in Hampshire where he is being questioned in relation to the deaths of two teenage girls in the town yesterday.

The victims, two teenage girls from Gosport, were pedestrians involved in a collision with a green Honda Civic car, which was being driven along Ann’s Hill Road at approximately 4am on Sunday.

Jasmine Allsop, aged 14, died at the scene of the collision in Ann’s Hill Road in Gosport. Olivia Lewry, aged 16, was taken to hospital where she died later.

A police superintendent has granted an extension for detectives to continue questioning the suspect in custody until 7.30pm tonight.

Support for the victims’ families A Home Office post-mortem examination for Olivia Lewry is due to take place this afternoon.

Dedicated family liaison officers continue to work with next-of-kin to ensure their welfare at this distressing time.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Dick Pearson of the Hampshire Major Investigation Team said: “I would like to thank members of the public for their substantial co-operation and assistance with our investigation so far.

“A dedicated team of officers and staff from a range of departments are working closely together to analyse leads from witnesses and forensics.

“The green Honda Civic is the subject of further examinations to ensure all potential evidence has been gathered and preserved.”

Det Supt Pearson has also issued a plea for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “A key line of enquiry is identifying as many witnesses as possible with information about the behaviour of the driver in the green Honda Civic around the Gosport area during the early hours of Sunday morning.

“I would appeal to anyone with useful information to contact the Hampshire Major Investigation Team directly at Fratton Police Station by phoning 101 and quoting Operation Barb."

Meanwhile, officers are also asking that anyone with information do not post it online rather than contacting the police.

Det Supt Pearson added: "I am also urging anyone with information to avoid posting details or any rumours on the internet or social media pages.

“This plea particularly applies to names and possible motives of people perceived to be involved in the circumstances surrounding this case.

“Such speculation is upsetting and disrespectful to the victims’ families, and can also have unintended effects on important lines of enquiry and evidence ahead of any future court case.”
