A TEENAGER has been hit by a train, as scores of horrified passengers looked on.

Passengers between Basingstoke and Eastleigh face delays of up to an hour following the incident, which happened on the southbound platform.

British Transport Police are currently at the scene with Hampshire Constabulary in assistance.

The incident is affecting South West Trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth, Southampton Central and Weymouth.

It is also affecting CrossCountry trains between Birmingham New Street and Bournemouth.

All rail services were suspendended until shortly before 7pm, although it would still be sometime before the timetable returned to normal.

Scores of people were stood on the platform at the time, but the station has since been closed to the public.

John Smith from Poole said: “I've been here half an hour and we are being told someone jumped off the platform.

“The station is completely closed. I'm expecting to be here a long time.”

One female  student said: “I’ve heard it’s a boy who has gone under the train. It’s terrible. Lots of people saw him. There was a lady here earlier who I think has given a statement to the police.”

Tara O’Connell, 21, a student, said: “It’s chaos here but what can you do? Someone said earlier there was lots of witnesses. It was rush hour.

“I’m trying to get to London. I think I will have to get to Basingstoke somehow.”

Passengers were seen crying on the platform following the incident, which involved a freight train.

Scores of passengers were left confused by contradictory information in the space of a few minutes.

A tannoy announced: "We are sorry to announce the 18.08 South West Trains service to London Waterloo is delayed by approximately 40 minutes."

But 30 seconds later a train pulled in heading for London Waterloo at around 6.42pm.

The blue metal shutters were raised and passengers rushed onto the platform to get onto the train.

In a statment, British Transport Police, said: "Officers from the BTP and Hampshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 5.16PM and is currently being treated as non suspicious.

"Medics from the local Ambulance service also attended but the Person was pronounced deceased at the scene. a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

"Officers are currently working to hand back the lines and return the railway to normal running."
