Residents are fed up with a mysterious yellow liquid seeping through the ceilings of Albion Towers in Southampton

But the ordeal is all too real for residents of one of Southampton’s biggest tower blocks, as the strange substance is seeping through their ceilings.

Now they are demanding the city council sorts the problem out amid fears it may be urine leaking in from a flat higher up.

People living in the 150-flat Albion Towers say they have been plagued by leaks through the roofs of the 15-storey block for several months.

But tenants living on one floor of the building have called on council bosses to act quickly after puddles of the yellow liquid started appearing outside their front doors five days ago.

It has now got so bad, with large amounts of the mystery fluid accumulating by her front door that Angela Chicken has put buckets out to stop the area outside her flat flooding.

The 52-year-old said: “We have had water coming through the ceiling before.

“But when I came out and saw it was yellow, I wondered what it was – it looks like urine.

“It is disgusting and the smell reminds me of the zoo.

“We need the council to come and work out exactly what it is, as there are children who run up and down the corridor.”

The mum-of-one, a SureStart worker, says she has contacted the council several times to complain but the problem has not been resolved yet.

She added: “Normally when I call the ActionLine they are excellent, but with this thing that clearly needs further investigation, they haven’t responded.”

She is not the only tenant experiencing issues in the tower.

Sandy Smith says water has leaked through into her living room and caused her to redecorate twice.

Referring to the yellow liquid, the 69-year-old said: “It’s not on. The kids run up and down here, they could potentially touch whatever it is.”

Ward councillor John Noon said: “I was aware there’s some leaking there, I’m not aware of a yellow substance though.

“I’m sure the council will get someone out there to look at it as soon as possible, and I shall look into it myself.”

A council spokesman said the authority does not comment on individual cases, but added: “Appointments are made for the earliest time possible, and naturally we will do everything we can to ensure that the situation is rectified as soon and safely as possible.

“We also highly recommend that residents have the appropriate contents insurance cover in place.”
