ARSONISTS have destroyed a nativity scene outside a Southampton church.
Firefighters from St Mary’s Fire Station were called to Shirley Warren Action Church at about 8.30pm last night after neighbours noticed the blaze.
The congregation at the Warren Crescent church had been working for the past few weeks to create a nativity scene which has now gone up in smoke.
It had been filled with characters from the scene prior to this afternoon’s service.
But the church leaders were defiant and said they would carry on with this afternoon’s Christingle service which takes place at 4pm.
Treasurer Angie Baker said: “They’re not going to beat us.”
The scene before it was destroyed
Church minister, Rev Jenny Elliot, said: “There’s going to be a log fire, food, carols and we will have people in there [the burnt-out stable].”
She added: “This is about keeping in the spirit of the season, that’s important.”
