SINGING sensation Craig David will be roaring Saints on in their EFL Cup Final date with Manchester United at Wembley today.
The superstar DJ grew up watching his hometown heroes at The Dell and lived just a stone’s throw from St Mary’s Stadium.
One of his greatest thrills during his recent comeback was seeing childhood heroes Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali in a crowd of 40,000 dancing to his Common People headline set on Southampton Common last summer - and receiving a signed ball from the pair in return.
And Craig, who is back living in London after a stint in Miami, will be in the crowd on Sunday, hoping to see the team bring back the silverware to Southampton.
The 35-year-old, who this week announced a 15,000 capacity homecoming at the home of Hampshire Cricket, told the Daily Echo: “It’s going to be great.
“Southampton is such a great team and we have such an amazing academy and youth set up that, even with a change in manager or loss of players, we can still get something out of each season like reaching a cup final or getting into Europe.
“When you’ve experienced going all the way down to League One, you enjoy the success even more.
“I hope the players enjoy it and play the kind of football that we are able to play. When we play like that we can beat the bigger teams and I’ve got a feeling we’ll bring it out.
“It would be really amazing for the city. We’ve always had a great footballing history and it would be great to come back here with a trophy.”
Around 32,000 Southampton fans have sold out the club’s allocation of tickets with many thousands more expected to be cheering Saints on from neutral sections of the national stadium.
Winning the cup would go down as one of the most iconic moments in the club’s 132 year history. It would be their first major silverware in the 41 years since defeating this weekend’s opponents Manchester United in the FA Cup Final in 1976.
Aside from the glory, winning the EFL Cup is a ticket to European football. The winner will enter the Europa League at the third qualifying stage next season.
