SCORES of health campaigners made their message on saving the National Health Service (NHS) loud and clear in a demonstration in Southampton today.
Around 100 people gathered outside the Bargate, and then marched through the centre of town, where they shouted "Save our NHS" and "Torys out out out."
The demonstration was part of the NHS Roadshow, which urges people to not vote for the Conservatives, as they claim the party are ruining the NHS.
The Roadshow was organised by NHS doctors, nurses and campaigners working with Health Campaigns Together, Keep Our NHS Public and The People’s Assembly.
Campaigners say that the Conservatives will "sell off" parts of the NHS, and fear it could end up being privatised, they also argued that a hard Brexit could see thousands of staff from overseas leave the NHS.
The Conservatives claim that will spend £8bn in real terms over the course of the next parliament on the NHS, and the party also say they will recruit 10,000 mental health professionals, and there will also be a new GP contract.
However, the party have come under fire over backing recommendations in the controversial Naylor review, which is an independent report, which sets out how the Government can fund NHS reforms by selling land it no longer needs and buildings which are costly to maintained.
Activists have argued that this sets out an agenda to privatise the NHS.
The demonstration ended up at Guildhall Square on Saturday where people heard speeches from Labour's Southampton Test parliamentary candidate Alan Whitehead, Jed Swinton from the Royal College of Nursing, David Smith from Southampton Keep Our NHS Public and Labour cabinet member for health in Southampton Cllr Dave Shields.
