RECORD numbers of budding athletes took part in the annual Southampton Primary Schools Athletics Championships featuring 22 schools from across the city.
The event, held at Southampton Sports Centre, saw Oakwood’s Amy Wall win the 80m sprint in a record 11.25 seconds.
Boys from Fair Isle schools smashed the 4x100 metre relay with their time of 1 minute 4 seconds and breaking the record for the girls’ lower school long jump was Mille Gunn of Bittern Church of England School with her leap of 3.39m.
Nick Humphries, from Townhill Primary School, who was one of the organisers.
He said: “It’s been a very busy event and most schools have brought at least 20 children.
“It’s the key schools athletics event in the calendar and with the increase in numbers the standard has improved.”
