YOUNG Sophie Pinckney's happy giggle and lovely grin help make every day more bearable for her mum who she cares for.

The 12-year-old has been nominated by the Southampton Young Carers' Group for the junior section of the Daily Echo Carer of the Year award, backed by Southampton Lions.

For the past three years the Millbrook Community School pupil has helped her mum Beverley with the household chores, the shopping and medication.

Back injury Beverley hurt her back in a bus accident which happened as she was returning to the family home in Millbrook, after watching the arrival of Queen Mary 2.

She still suffers back and leg pain which means she can only walk short distances and also suffers from epilepsy.

"I used to be in a wheelchair and I am very limited in my walking. I can manage very short distances with Sophie holding my arm and guiding me.

"My condition means that Sophie has not got the life she used to have. She has been absolutely brilliant and has been more of an adult.

"Sophie is my life with her lovely grin and happy giggle.

"She is a real star in my dark days."

The Daily Echo is running the Carer of the Year competition with the Southampton Lions group which every year raises thousands of pounds to support local good causes.

The Lions are holding a dinner dance, on March 1 and would like to hear from businesses that can help out with the raffle and prizes. If you can help call 0845 833 5835.
