AN intimate garden party with fish and chips and an ice cream van saw Mr and Mrs Whitfield from Woolston wed in superb style.

Their bridesmaids may have had to make sure they had face masks that matched their dresses and their grand three course meal may have been replaced by a takeaway in true Covid fashion, but they wouldn't have changed a thing.

Ciara and Dean's ceremony for 30 at Holy Saviour Church in Bitterne, the only wedding to take place there in 2020, was followed by a reception in a back garden and an English staycation.

Daily Echo:

Ciara, nee Cashell, told us more:

(Q) How and where did you get engaged?

(A) I found the engagement ring in a Yorkshire pudding during dinner with family.

(Q) Did Covid have any impact on your wedding plans?

(A) We originally planned to get married on 11th April 2020 with almost everything ready to go. However, lockdown was announced in March so this could no longer go ahead. We debated moving it to 2021 but we were having difficulties with potential extra costs.

Once we got to the summer we just decided to get married! Fortunately the vicar, Tony Palmer, was available on 8th August to marry us. We had a very small reception in a back garden.

Daily Echo:

I had made the wedding cake but as it was a few months since the original wedding day I had to remove all the icing and marzipan and re-ice it! As a surprise, Dean and his mum decorated it beautifully. I had also made lots of wedding stationery that had to be binned.

For our honeymoon we went on a road trip to Blackpool, Alton Towers and Butlins.

(Q) Who made up your bridal party?

(A) Bridesmaids Joy, Miriam, Sophie, Kayleigh Victoria and Amy and flower girls Darcey and Marnie.

(Q) What are your best memories of the day?

(A) The weather was amazing - so hot! Betsy the ice cream trailer was perfect for the sunny weather. Our wedding car included a lovely bottle of Champagne, which helped make our day extra special. For our wedding breakfast, we had fish and chips, which was delicious. This was far from our original three course sit down meal but absolutely perfect. We actually really enjoyed the intimacy of the day. We got to spend time with close family and had an amazing day. Looking back, there is nothing I would change!

Daily Echo:

(Q) What was the most stressful part of organising your wedding?

(A) Once we had decided to go ahead, everything fell into place. The only stressful part was worrying it wouldn’t be able to go ahead.
