TWO people at a maritime charity are set to raise thousands for medical research.

Sharon Coveney of Southampton and her mate Gordon Foot are to skydive 15,000ft in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK.

The 55-year-old deputy chief of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) was inspired to raise the money by a dementia-diagnosed friend Judy.

Sharon, alongside MNWB volunteer Gordon, plan to raise £5,000 on May 2, 2024, at Dunkeswell Airfield, Honiton.

Sharon said: "Dementia affects almost one million people in the UK alone and has a devastating impact on families.

"My friend Judy is among that number so sadly, research is our only chance of changing the ending for her and other people affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

"Backed by a team of passionate scientists and supporters such as Gordon and me, I like to think we are helping to challenge the way people think about dementia. Alzheimer’s Research needs more funding, as for every one dementia researcher there are four cancer researchers.

"By supporting us and donating to this fantastic charity, it will help provide pivotal research, dedicated to causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure.

"I’ve jumped two times before so I am aware that to have a great skydive, my body needs to be nourished, hydrated, and calm, so I will make sure that I drink lots of water and get an early night before I arrive at the drop zone!"

James Warren, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: "We’re so grateful to Sharon and Gordon for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK. If nothing changes, one in two of us will be directly affected by dementia – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

"Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us get closer to a cure for people with dementia and their loved ones. We wish them the best of luck!"
