Some roads in Southampton will return to a 30mph limit only two years after the rollout of 20mph limits.

The original 2022 decision to move to 20mph was met with controversy with 14 areas in the city earmarked for speed reduction.

But now Hill Lane and Shirley High Street will return to a 30mph limit, Southampton City Council's Labour leader has said just days before the local election.

Councillor Lorna Fielker said the decision was made following feedback from residents.

She said: "Southampton Labour is committed to making it safer and easier to travel, however you choose to get around.

“It is why we introduced our 20mph programme.

“After hearing feedback we have heard that while overall extremely successful in residential areas, main roads, Hill Lane and Shirley High Street will return to 30mph.”

She added: "There is a formal process which needs to be followed in order to do make the change.

"It will be implemented at the earliest opportunity."

An extra zebra crossing has been installed in Hill Lane to boost safety.

According to the Cllr Fielker, people have said the 20mph speed limits have caused problems on main roads.

A Labour statement added: "This was funded through a national Government programme.

"We will always continue to fight for money for Southampton but need to make sure we review that schemes are successful when implemented."
