A resident's car was shunted into his neighbour's house after a crash, writing off the car and leaving the house severely damaged.

Allan Vincent's Volkswagen CC was left propping up his next door neighbour's house after it was crashed into by another car shortly before 12.45am on Tuesday morning.

Hamble Lane was closed for several hours yesterday after the shocking collision.

The road closure, between Portsmouth Road and Pound Road, caused heavy delays during rush hour, which eased as the morning wore on.

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed a 22-year-old man from Locks Heath has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A spokesperson said: "Police were called at 12.43am this morning to reports of a collision on Hamble Lane.

"The collision involved two cars, one of which has collided with a house.

"No injuries were reported.

"A 22-year-old man from Locks Heath has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is currently in police custody."

Allan, 53, said he was getting ready to go to sleep when he heard a "massive thud which shook the house".

"I came outside and saw a mess; my car was in my neighbour's house and I tried to calm down my neighbour's wife, who had four kids in the house at the time."

Another neighbour, who Allan described as 'lovely', took in his two children and his neighbour's four children, while emergency services dealt with what happened.

With the back of the car completely mangled, and the front wedged into his neighbour's bay window, the vehicle has had to be written off.

Allan said: "I’ve had it since 2016 and it was in pristine condition."

Mike Ellis, Allan's neighbour, has lived in the affected house with his family since 2016.

He was in Exeter on a work trip when he got the call about what happened.

He said: "My wife called me in hysterics and said I needed to come home as soon as possible."

When he arrived, he could not believe what he saw: "The car has gone into our living room."

The gas and heating in both properties has been turned off while it is made safe.

Allan said: "My car cannot move as it is holding up my neighbours house. I haven’t slept all night."

Nicky Vincent, Allan's wife, said their two children were "distraught" after what happened.

The 44-year-old said: "Our children said they did not want to live on this road anymore after the incident happened.

"The speeds at which people drive down this road at night is unbelievable.

"This road is a liability; it is dreadful."
