The bridge closure comes after Southampton has spent two days in gridlock while junction 7 of the M27 is closed until 6am Saturday.

The council took to social media to warn residents of the bridge closure, writing on X: "An incident has occurred on The Itchen Bridge and the Bridge is currently closed in both directions whilst emergency services attend.

"Please use an alternative route."

The bridge was reopened by police at around 7am.
