PORTSMOUTH is set to become the home of almost all the Royal Navy’s warships following a cost-cutting review.
The Royal Navy dockyard at Plymouth will now transfer all of its frigate warships to the city which is currently home to two operational aircraft carriers, six frigates and seven destroyers.
Portsmouth had been expected to lose out to Plymouth as part of a Ministry of Defence review to cut overcapacity and costs.
The UK Navy bases of Plymouth, Portsmouth and Faslane were looked at during the review.
An official announcement by the MoD is expected over the next few weeks but it is understood 11 frigates currently based at Plymouth’s Devonport dockyard will move to Portsmouth as a result of the review.
