THE ashes of the last Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean, are to be scattered on the water at the spot where the illfated liner departed from Southampton almost a century ago.

A Southampton harbourmaster’s launch will be used to carry Millvina’s ashes on their final journey to an area close to berth 44 in the city’s Eastern Docks.

A memorial service for Millvina will be held earlier at 11am on Saturday, October 24 at St.Mary’s Church at Copythorne where her funeral took place last June.

David Hill of the British Titanic Society, who is helping to organise the memorial events, said: “This will not be a private occasion but rather we would like as many Southampton people as possible to attend the service to remember Millvina.

“She was a wonderful character, and a lovely lady who was known to so many locally, so it would be wonderful if a large congregation was there to give her a memorable send-off.

“St. Mary’s Church can accommodate a congregation of more than 300, so it is hoped as many friends as possible will join us on this very special day.’’ Rev. Neville Jacob, who also officiated at her funeral, will lead the service, which will reflect Millvina’s close connections with the sea, ships and Southampton.

Following the service a small, private party will embark on the launch and sail into berth 44 where Millvina’s ashes will be scattered.

Members of the public will be able to watch this ceremony from the new Ocean Terminal opposite berth 44.

Mr Hill said: “Everyone is welcome, but it would assist the organisers if anyone intending to be at the service or the Ocean Terminal could contact me on 01925 764370 or send an email to millvinafund@britishtitanicsociet y.com.
