One in ten people in Hampshire are now on the Government’s DNA database, it has been revealed.
More than 70 per cent of those with their DNA details being held are male – 15 per cent of all men in the county.
The figures have been revealed after a parliamentary question by Romsey MP Sandra Gidley.
She said: “These figures are shocking. The government is succeeding in criminalising huge swathes of the population, particularly men.
"The government has little regard for guilt or innocence, nor for personal privacy and liberty.”
The MP added: "There is also little evidence that this enormous database of DNA from innocent people has led to a surge in crime detection rates.
"It is vital that the Government comply with the European Court of Human Rights’ ruling, and remove the profiles of innocent people from the database immediately."
