A MAN has been cleared of causing death by dangerous driving on a notorious Hampshire road.
Jurors took less than half an hour to unanimously find Robert Davison not guilty in relation to a smash on Marchwood bypass in September 2008.
The crash claimed the life of father-of-two Tim Reynolds, who was just minutes from his home when his motorbike collided with a Volvo. The 51-year-old, of Whittington Close, Hythe, was pronounced dead at the scene – the junction of Twiggs Lane and the A326.
Shouts of “Rot in hell!” were aimed at Mr Davison, of Teddington, Middlesex, from the public gallery as he was freed from the dock at Winchester Crown Court.
After the verdict, Tim’s mother, Beryl, said: “I’m angry at the county council. For years that junction has been brought up at council meetings and nothing was done about it.
“Something should have been done at the junction years ago, but it was not until we got up a petition that something was.
“When the council realised feeling was very high, then they did something about it.”
Last July funding was approved for a raft of measures to improve safety on the A326, which claimed the lives of three bikers in the summer of 2008. They include a pedestrian crossing, street lighting and anti-skid surfacing.
The improvements came after campaigners organised an emotional public meeting demanding action. Bikers also rode to Hampshire County Council’s headquarters in Winchester to deliver a 2,500-name petition.
Mrs Reynolds, reflecting on the outcome of the four-and-a-half day trial, added: “I’m glad it’s all over and I’m sorry it has taken so long to come to court.”
Mr Reynolds was driving back from Portsmouth ferry terminal when his Suzuki was in collision with a Volvo. He had been on a biking holiday in the Massif Central area of France with friends.
