A MURDER investigation is under way after a woman was found fatally injured in a Southampton flat.
The woman, in her 60s, died while she was being treated by paramedics, after suffering a head injury.
Forensics officers were last night continuing to examine the scene, at a ground floor flat in Broadlands Road, close to the busy Highfield campus of Southampton University.
Dozens of police officers closed nearby streets and pathways after a member of the public raised the alarm.
A post-mortem examination to discover what caused the woman’s injury was expected to be carried out last night.
Uniformed search teams checked bins, under cars and through drains as they hunted for clues about how the woman sustained her fatal injuries.
Two cars, a navy blue Vauxhall Zafira and a Renault Laguna, were removed by tow trucks from outside the property.
A dog unit was called in as officers combed the undergrowth through pathways off Broadlands Road and nearby Woodcote Road.
The Venetian blinds were closed over the bay window at the flat, which forms part of a semi-detached house. But the lights were on as specialist forensics teams worked into the night.
Shocked neighbours say dozens of police rushed to the building and that two men and two women were handcuffed and taken away. Another witness said they saw two young children being escorted from the scene.
Neighbour, mum-of-four Paula Tyres, 35, said her children would sometimes go over to play at the house.
She said: “The police knocked on the door and asked us whether we heard any screaming coming from the property, but we didn’t hear anything.
“It’s quite frightening to think that something like this can have happened over the road. It’s really shocking.”
One 59-year-old woman, from the same road, who did not want to be named, added: “It’s terrifying that something like this is happening right here – especially with all the children around.”
Last night police said four people had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Two men, aged 30 and 33, and two women, aged 33 and 35, were being questioned at police stations across the county.
