THIS unlucky deer got into a jam when it tried to squeeze through a garden gate.
Firefighters were called to free the male roe from a wrought iron gate of a home in St Cross Road,Winchester.
He had become trapped by his hips and needed the help of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s specialist animal team to release him. They restrained and calmed the deer by covering him in a sleeping bag, before using a car jack to spread the bars of the gate.
Although stunned by yesterday afternoon’s ordeal and suffering a few grazes, the roebuck was unharmed and taken to St Catherines Hill Nature Reserve before being released back into the wild.
Watch manager Anton Phillips said: “Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service reminds the public that any animal, small or large, that is trapped or in distress can be potentially dangerous.
“It is extremely important to stay quiet in the vicinity of a wild animal that has become trapped to give it the best possible chance of survival. I urge members of the public to request the immediate assistance of specialists to rescue the animal, rather than attempting to do so themselves.”
