NEW accommodation for more than 100 students will be built in Winchester’s Sparkford Road after almost two years of planning battles.
Abbotswood Properties already had permission to put up the buildings with 99 bedrooms after winning a planning appeal in June, after the council threw out an original proposal in January 2010.
They then came back with plans to add an extra storey to the buildings, increasing the number of bedrooms to 114 while also providing a flat for a warden.
Residents opposed to the proposal told a Winchester City Council planning committee that the appeal had been judged on inaccurate details and the increased student presence would harm the area.
But despite some concerns from the planning committee the proposal was approved by ten votes to two because of the weight of the planning appeal decision earlier in the year.
