Saints target Djamel Abdoun is expected to leave Olympiakos within the next fortnight.
The Algerian winger, pictured, a superstar of the Greek league, is understood to have attracted the interest of a number of clubs, including Saints and Nottingham Forest.
Olympiakos are said to be ready to sell him for a fee in the region of £1.2m with Saints one of a number of sides interested in him.
Though there is thought to be a big money offer for the player from the Middle East, it is understood that the 27-year-old could favour a move to England.
Saints’ interest in Abdoun has come after scouting his club colleague David Fuster, also an attacking midfielder, who remains a potential target as well. The pair have helped Olympiakos to back to back Greek Super League and cup titles.
Fuster has won three league titles on the spin. Abdoun’s agent is believed to have spoken to Olympiakos about Saints’ potential interest and they are now awaiting a firm offer from St Mary’s.
Olympiakos are currently on pre-season tour in Austria, while Saints are in Spain before going out to Austria themselves.
Abdoun started his career at Paris St Germain but was released without making a first team appearance.
After that he played for Ajaccio in France before an unsuccessful loan move to Manchester City in 2007 and another to Sedan.
Having impressed at the French lower league club he had a stint with Nantes and then Greek side Kavala from where Olympiakos signed him on a free transfer.
Abdoun has made 50 appearances for the Greek side, scoring nine goals, and has also played 11 times for Algeria, including helping them to fourth place in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
Fuster is more a veteran at 31-years-old but is known to Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino from his time in Spain.
The Spanish midfielder graduated through the ranks of UD Oliva, Villarreal B and Elche before Villarreal resigned him for €500,000.
After an impressive stint in Spain, Olympiakos paid €1.5m to bring him to Greece where he has gone on make 67 appearances, scoring 20 goals.
He also scored twice against Arsenal in both the home and away ties of their Champions League group meetings in 2011 and has proved a consistent performer.
