AFC Portchester have underlined their ambition by signing 24-year-old ex-Saints wide man Jake Thomson from Salisbury City.
The Trinidad & Tobago international started his career at St Mary's and has since had spells with Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers.
He joined Newport County in June 2012, making 25 appearances last season, including three while out on loan at Lincoln.
The Portsmouth-born midfielder signed for Conference Premier new boys Salisbury in August but has had limited opportunities at Old Sarum.
Mick Jenkins, director of football at ambitious Sydenhams Premier outfit Portchester, said: "Signing Jake is a statement of intent. We're looking at bringing in players geared up for the next level."
Tonight's league fixture between Graham Rix's Portchester and Sydenhams Premier title favourites Sholing has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. "The overnight rain just killed it," said Jenkins.
