WINCHESTER City knocked out AFC Totton in the second round of the Red Insure Cup after a 5-2 victory at the Testwood Stadium in a very lively Hampshire derby.
It took less than ten minutes for the opening goal to arrive. Winchester’s Javi Santafe Vivo crossed a dangerous ball into the box, and while Matt Benham’s shot only rattled the post, Warren Bentley made no mistake to give the away side the lead, writes Talia Jones.
Jake Rawkins and Mike Gosney both had clear openings on the Winch goal, but it was 2-0 on 26 minutes. A simple through ball left City debutant Halam Basker one-on-one with Totton goalkeeper Steve Mowthorpe and he blasted the ball into the net.
The Stags’ defence looked fragile at times in the first half and didn’t improve in the first minute of the second half either.
Benham’s floating cross from the right came into the box, Santafe Vivo was unable to get a clear shot away, but it deflected onto Basker, who unknowingly watched it trickle over the line.
First-half substitute and debutant, Dylan Knight, looked promising in a Totton shirt, but it was a moment of chaos that led to the Stags’ first goal.
Knight and Winchester’s Lewis Fennemore clashed heads with City ’keeper Brad Snelling, giving Taylor Edwards an open goal to aim at and a chance to get the home side back into the tie with 35 minutes remaining.
A penalty was then awarded to Totton after Knight had been brought down by a crunching tackle in the box. He stepped up to take it, but his effort was parried round the post by a diving Snelling.
Rawkins delivered a textbook corner to the back post where Knight was lurking, and the ex-Fawley forward headed into the top left corner to score his first league goal for the club, giving the Stags a real opportunity to get back level in the game at 3-2.
However, the last 15 minutes didn’t go to plan for the home team. Winchester substitute Harrison Fay smashed home the ball from outside the box. Then, with one minute of normal time left, Benham’s shot was punched away by Mowthorpe, but only into the path of Adam 'Taz' Roberts to complete the scoring.
