CHESTER’S jaw-dropping 8-2 defeat of Aldershot on Tuesday will not play on Eastleigh minds when The Blues roll up at the Silverlake Stadium this weekend.
Manager Chris Todd insists the Spitfires must have tunnel vision and make the final 11 games “all about us.”
Although Eastleigh’s 2-1 midweek win over Woking was nowhere as eye-catching as Chester’s, it told Todd all he needed to know about his players’ desire to turn round a poor run of results that had yielded just one league win in ten.
“We’d had a heart-to-heart trying to solve the problems we’d been having and when I asked the lads if we were all in this together, I was thinking to myself ‘are we?’” he confessed.
“But Tuesday proved they’re in this 100 per cent. They showed tremendous character, belief and desire and proved what a strong group we are.
“We won't look over our shoulders at what anyone else is doing, we’ll just concentrate on us.”
Eastleigh didn’t make it easy for themselves against Woking, having skipper Paul Reid sent off for retaliation after 19 minutes. It was their third red card in four games and their seventh of the season, earning centre-back Reid a three-match ban for violent conduct.
Jamie Turley will slot straight back in after serving a one-match suspension, but midfielder Ben Strevens still has four of his seven-game punishment remaining.
The Spitfires are the Vanarama National League's worst disciplinary offenders and Todd stressed: “It’s something we have to get better at.
“Sometimes frustration boils over, but you have to control it.
“Turley comes back, but I’m still disappointed to lose Reid because he’s my captain."
Numbers were balanced up when Woking lost Kieran Murtagh to two yellows. Eastleigh hauled themselves back on terms with an inspired Jai Reason finish before centre-back Will Evans snatched victory at the death.
"The performance of Will and some of the younger lads who got their opportunity was really pleasing," said Todd, whose side sit ninth, five points shy of the play-off zone.
Striker Matt Tubbs was a surprise midweek absentee due to a technicality with his emergency loan from Portsmouth. Now sorted, he can stay until the end of the season - play-offs included.
Midfielder Andy Drury will miss Saturday and Tuesday’s home game against Bromley with hamstring/calf trouble while top scorer James Constable is struggling with a sore thigh.
With Yemi Odubade fit and Luke Coulson settling well, Eastleigh have allowed January signing Kaid Mohamed to join VNL North outfit Tamworth on loan until the end of the season.
Striker Ross Lafayette’s loan to Aldershot has been extended to the maximum 93 days, meaning he is due back in the final week of the campaign.
Chester's 21-year-old ex-Stoke and Ipswich striker James Alabi will be one to watch on Saturday having plundered four of his side's eight goals on Tuesday.
