SWANSEA City’s Russell Martin is reportedly set to be appointed as the new Saints manager as soon as next week.

The 37-year-old former Norwich City defender has been in charge of the South Wales club for two years, taking over in 2021.

Martin previously managed MK Dons having only retired from his professional playing career in 2019.

Incoming director of football Jason Wilcox will work alongside the manager to oversee footballing operations, while a new head of recruitment is also set to be appointed.

Martin’s contract at Swansea had reached its final 12 months and the boss was initially scheduled to fly out to the US to discuss a new deal with the club’s owners.

However, The Athletic now report that Martin is set to become the new Saints manager and will replace Ruben Selles at the end of the campaign.

He would become Sport Republic’s third managerial appointment in 18 months after Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl – before Selles took charge in February.

The report details that no formal approach has been made by Saints to Swansea yet but there is an increased expectation Martin will take over at St Mary’s.

Swansea finished 10th in the Championship this season but Martin was left frustrated at his club’s lack of investment.

He is popular amongst the Swans fans and deploys a possession-based style, with his team completing more passes than any other in the second division this campaign.
