SAINTS are reportedly interested in signing West Ham United defender Ben Johnson, who has entered the final year of his contract.

Former England under-21 international Johnson could depart the Hammers after he and the club have not come to an agreement on a new deal.

Johnson, 23, has made 87 appearances for his boyhood side and was part of the squad that won the Europa Conference League last season.

Saints manager Russell Martin had stated this summer that the club could look to replenish the full-back ranks after the big-money exit of Tino Livramento.

London-born Johnson was an unused substitute for David Moyes in the opening two matches of the Premier League season.

The Athletic now report Southampton’s interest in the defender, who had progressed through the football academy at West Ham.

Johnson is a versatile full-back who can operate on both sides – a trait Martin admires – and could represent a good value addition for the club.

Johnson has also been credited for his attitude. Following club legend Mark Noble’s retirement, he labelled taking on his dressing room sweeping role ‘an honour’.
