FORWARD Adam Armstrong has been named in the Championship team of the week following his brace in Southampton's 3-1 win over Leeds United.

The Geordie lifted the mood inside St Mary's after a tough set of results by putting Saints in front just 104 seconds into the game on Saturday.

Having been set through on goal by an incisive pass from Kyle Walker-Peters, Armstrong lifted the ball over Illan Meslier from a tight angle.

Despite only managing a total of 14 touches in a brilliant first half performance, the 26 year old added his second, and Saints' third, on 35 minutes.

He twisted his way past full back Sam Byram to create enough space to fire past Meslier, although the ball did take a slight touch off Pascal Struijk before it crashed into the net.

Saints boss Russell Martin was adamant that the goal should be given to Armstrong and pointed towards his composure as the reason it shouldn't be deemed an own goal.

Armstrong's second home brace of the season took his tally for the season up to seven goals from nine games.

That's enough to see him tie with Sunderland's Jack Clarke, who has also struck seven in nine games, however, Armstrong has also provided one assist.
