THERE is a new group of supporters looking to make all the noise at St Mary’s, away from the already existing singing blocks.
Saints manager Russell Martin even referenced their continued efforts in a recent post-match interview.
While the Northam and Itchen North stands have an established atmosphere, the ‘Back of the Chapel’ movement – based in Block 15 – is looking to create a third.

Started by a Saints supporter called Tom, with the help of new friend George, the group are already in contact with and supported by the club themselves.
They have taken advantage of cheaper tickets in the process, but Tom adds it is about making as much noise as possible and getting behind the team.
“I was keen to try and improve the atmosphere down the Chapel because I definitely think fans play a huge role in the morale and performance of the team,” Tom told the Daily Echo.
“Russell Martin has confirmed this already this season and it seems he has similar views. Whilst the Northam and Itchen North are loud, they are in constant competition with the away fans – something I’m sure many of them enjoy.
“Being where we are, only takes a few voices to get some chants going. It also filters down the stand and allows other supporters who prefer to sit to join in. Our aim is to get the back few rows chanting, whilst respecting the wants of other fans.”
Southampton’s 3-1 win over Leeds United on Saturday was only the side’s fourth league win at St Mary’s since April 2022.
As a result of an extended poor run of form, Saints had been locked in a cycle of failing to deliver in front of their own disappointed and expectant fans.
George, also speaking to the Daily Echo, said: “The atmosphere been poor the last few seasons and this seems a good idea to get other parts of the ground behind the team
“When the home end of the Northam is majority away fans, other stands sitting there in silence all game is a wasted opportunity of having a home advantage.”
The club remain in contact with ‘Back of the Chapel’ and has already taken steps to facilitate the movement and tailor stewarding in the area.
Tom initially met with director of sales Matthew Silvester and chief operating officer Tim Greenwell, while Kelly Lewis (head of fan experience) has indicated her support.
Saints CEO Phil Parsons revealed to the Daily Echo this month that the club are close to making announcements on safe standing but there are further consultations to be had.
Tom and George are appealing for supporters to join the movement should they wish – but, most importantly, to keep supporting the team.
Tom added: “The amount of positive feedback I’ve had from other fans has been fantastic. Those who sit down at that end have noticed the change in dynamic.
“We’ve had people say they’ll relocate to the Chapel next year. If you want to get involved or move your ticket over, contact me on Twitter @BackoftheChapel or contact the ticket office.”
