SAINTS manager Russell Martin declared hope that summer signing Ross Stewart will debut for the club within the next two weeks.

The 27 year old striker signed for Saints on deadline day but he had been on the sidelines since surgery on an Achilles injury in January.

Scotland international Stewart, who netted 10 goals in 13 Championship matches last season, has been working back to fitness at Staplewood.

He was in attendance at St Mary’s, sitting alongside injured captain Jack Stephens, for his side’s 3-1 victory over Birmingham City on Sunday.

Daily Echo:

Saints visit Millwall next weekend before welcoming West Bromwich Albion to Southampton and Martin revealed he expects Stewart to make at least one of those fixtures.

He told the Daily Echo: “He’s really close. If it’s not next week, hopefully, it will be the West Brom game.”

Meanwhile, striking competition Che Adams could be set to return at the same time after he missed Saturday’s win with an injury picked up at Preston North End.

Martin detailed: “I don’t think it’s going to be a long one, we’re hoping to have him back for next week but if not, it should be the week after.”

Martin started with a front three of Kamaldeen Sulemana, Charly Alcaraz and Adam Armstrong against Wayne Rooney’s Blues, with the latter two finding the net.
