WOMEN’S boss Marieanne Spacey-Cale revealed Saints will only look to recruit players who will strengthen their promotion chances this month.

Norwegian goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland remains their only January addition amid a tight promotion race.

Saints sit fourth in the Barclays Women’s Championship – but are only two points behind league leaders Charlton Athletic.

Spacey-Cale noted that she is conscious of how any January signings could disrupt the current Southampton squad.

“We have had a three-game week so I have been concentrating on those games,” she told the Daily Echo.

“If there is someone out there that can add absolute value then we will look to bring them in.

“I am happy with the squad we have got, but we have a few injuries so that might determine whether we need to bring someone in.

“We have got an excellent squad so it would take a really good player to come in and disrupt what we have.

“You also have to look at the dynamic of the group and how bringing someone in could shift that.

“The opportunity is still there if we want to bring anybody in – but I am really happy with the squad that we have got.”

Haaland’s arrival has added depth to Saints goalkeeping ranks, which also boasts England youth international Kayla Rendell and Bethany Howard.

The 25 year old arrives on the south coast having previously played in multiple divisions, including Serie A, the Scottish Premier League and the WSL.

“We knew she was available and we wanted to bring her in,” Spacey-Cale explained.

“We travelled for a few weeks before Christmas with only one goalkeeper.

“That isn’t ideal. That is why we made the decision to bring her in. She is a good person and a good keeper.

“Her addition will raise the levels once again. There will be no complacency because they will all be fighting for the number one shirt.”
