MANAGER Russell Martin remains hopeful that Saints will sign "one more player" ahead of transfer deadline day.

Southampton continue to be linked with signing a winger on loan ahead of the winter window closing on Thursday.

Joe Rothwell remains Southampton's only signing in January so far - and another loan move looks most likely due to Financial Fair Play limitations.

Manuel Benson and David Brooks are on Saints list of targets, while Crystal Palace's Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has also been linked.

When asked by the Daily Echo what supporters can expect over the next few days, Martin said: “I hope that we add one more player to the squad and that we don’t lose any of ours.

“We are going to have to wait and see. It is the hope that kills you.”

Martin has previously voiced that Southampton are yet to sign a replacement for Nathan Tella, who departed for Bayer Leverkusen after the Championship season started.

Sam Amo-Ameyaw, another academy graduate, has emerged as a potential longterm replacement on the right, but Martin played down that he could be the answer right now.

"We will still sign a winger for sure," Martin continued. "He is only a 17 year old kid with a huge amount of potential.

"The game really suited him towards the end because he could be free without any defensive responsibility on him."
