Saints secured a brilliant 3-1 victory over the Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge.
Sadio Mane was one of the scorers in a quite stunning performance.
Koeman said: “He played fantastic, but I think the whole team performance was impressive.
“After the fast 1-0 down we looked comfortable, and of course to win against teams like Chelsea you need your best players on that high level and Sadio was very dangerous in his movements.
“It was impossible to have a good defending against him.
“I think the whole team performance was perfect.”
He added: “Very proud of the players.
“I think a difficult start in the game, a little bit the same as last season, 1-0 down, difficulties in the beginning.
“I think after the 1-1 it was an important moment to score that 1-1.
“I think the difference between the first half and the second half was how we came out of the dressing room – really aggressive to press and to play good football. That makes the difference today.
“We were the better team, we had the better chance sin the game, and totally deserved this win today.”
Jose Mourinho was angry with referee Robert Madley for denying Chelsea a penalty, but Saints felt hard done by as well.
Koeman smiled: “Maybe then it was 2-5 the final result. Even worse for them.”
