Far be it from us to point out where England manager Roy Hodgson is going wrong…actually, sod it, we will.
Quite simply, Ryan Bertrand is the best English left back playing today. End of.
While we admire the qualities of his rivals for the national team slot, such as Leighton Baines, Kieron Gibbs and Danny Rose, anybody who watches Bertrand regularly would surely agree with us.
In time, and with Euro 2016 fast approaching, we will see whether Hodgson does. We hope for the best, but fear the worst.
Selfishly, however, what we want most of all is the best for Saints, and if that means keeping him our secret weapon then so be it.
Bertrand missed the opening stages of the season as Saints stuttered to just six points from their opening six matches and were eliminated from the Europa League before the group stages.
When did their form pick up? The exact moment Bertrand was fit to start again.
Saints went on an impressive six match unbeaten run, that included four victories – famously Chelsea away being one of them – to kick start the campaign.
Bertrand’s return was no coincidence – it was the catalyst.

Later in the season he would even prove himself just as adept as playing as the left sided of three centre halves.
He may go under the radar at national level, but there is no denying that for Saints he is an absolute superstar.
