Shane Long has topped off a breakthrough year at Saints by being voted the Daily Echo Player of the Season.
The £12m Republic of Ireland striker polled 44 per cent of more than 5,000 votes cast by supporters online, via email and post to become the 43rd winner of the famous trophy.
His name joins a list of winners that includes legendary figures such as Alan Ball, Kevin Keegan and Matt Le Tissier.
Virgil van Dijk, who scooped the club’s award, was second with 37 per cent, while Steven Davis came in third with six per cent.
Long is the joint top Premier League scorer for Saints this season with ten goals, the same as Sadio Mane and the man he is now keeping out of the side, Graziano Pelle.
