THE last time Southampton played in a Championship playoff semi-final it ended in penalty heartbreak.

They had managed to overturn Derby County's lead from the first leg, thanks to goals from Jhon Viafara and Grzegorz Rasiak but were unable to hold their nerve during the spot kicks.

It saw their dreams of Premier League promotion dashed as Derby went on to reach the top flight.

Ahead of the second leg between Southampton and West Brom, we have taken a look at what the squad from that day are up to now...

Kelvin Davis - Eastleigh manager.

Starting between the sticks that evening was Saints legend Kelvin Davis, who was only in his first season at the club and went on to play 299 games. 

The 47 year old now manages local National League side Eastleigh. He signed a three-year deal ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Chris Makin - Punditry in Qatar.

In 2008, Chris Makin was forced to retire after failing to overcome a hip injury that had prevented him from playing for some time.

He moved to Qatar over a decade ago to cover the Qatari league for English language television.

Chris Baird - Scout.

Former Northern Ireland international Chris Baird hung up his boots in February 2019 before going on to become a scout.

He became a scout for Saints in July 2019 and later took a role at Manchester City in August 2023.

Martin Cranie - Retired.

Martin Cranie, 37, only stepped away from football in 2021 after two years at Luton. Following his Saints exit in 2007 he went on to play for the likes of Portsmouth, Coventry and Barnsley.

Rudi Skacel - Retired.

Midfielder Rudi Skacel played at left-back that evening. The Czech journeyman played for over 10 different clubs in his career but is best remembered by Hearts supporters.

Jhon Viafara - Prison.

Colombian midfielder Jhon Viafara scored twice at Pride Park to help Saints overturn the deficit from the first leg and send the game to extra time.

In 2020, he was extradited to the United States to face charges of drug trafficking. He was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in US prison.

Pelé - Retired.

Although he only spent one season at Saints, Pelé remains active in the local community and recently worked alongside the club to front a campaign encouraging people to consider fostering children.

Andrew Surman - Saints academy coach.

Academy graduate Andrew Surman recently made his return to Saints, rejoining his boyhood club as a coach for the under-18s side.

Danny Guthrie - Dubai EPC UAE Head Coach.

Danny Guthrie initially joined Saints on an emergency loan deal from Liverpool in March 2007 - a deal which was extended until the end of the season.

The midfielder went on to play for the likes of Newcastle United, Reading and Blackburn before also playing in Norway and Indonesia.

After retiring from playing, Guthrie accepted a six-year bankruptcy undertaking, which runs until May 2028.

He now coaches out in Dubai and shares videos of his coaching journey on social media.

Leon Best - Agent.

Usually scoring goals for Southampton, Best turned into his own net at Pride Park before also missing from the spot during the shootout.

The Irish forward still went on to enjoy a successful career, during which he played 32 times in the Premier League.

Upon ending his playing career in 2018 after a serious knee injury, Best stepped into the world of football agency and is the co-founder of 86Ninety Sports Group.

Marek Saganowski - Zaglebie Sosnowiec manager.

Polish forward Marek Saganowski has transitioned to life in the dugout and currently works as Zaglebie Sosnowiec's manager, a second-tier Polish side.

Substitutes

Djamel Belmadi - Manager.

Former Algerian international Djamel Belmadi came on in place of Makin with 19 regular minutes remaining in Derbyshire.

It transpired to be his last appearance for the club. He retired two years later before launching a coaching career, which saw him work in Qatar for eight years.

He then went on to land a dream role with his national team and guided Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He resigned from his role after failing to win a game at this year's AFCON.

Iñigo Idiakez - Manager.

It was Iñigo Idiakez who missed the decisive spot kick, smashing over the crossbar, that saw Southampton lose on penalties.

The Spaniard would retire a year later before transitioning to coaching. His most recent managerial role was at Real Leaon, where he won just three of his 14 league matches. 

Grzegorz Rasiak - Agent.

Polish forward Grzegorz Rasiak scored the late goal which ensured Saints kept their promotion hopes alive.

He is now the owner of Grzegorz Rasiak Sport, a football agency, and Korty Skórzewo, a tennis company.

Bradley Wright-Phillips - MLS pundit.

Forward Bradley Wright-Phillips did not enter the field on the evening and is perhaps best remembered across the pond in the MLS.

He is the sixth-highest goalscorer in the league's history and has carved out a career as a pundit covering the MLS since retirement.

Bartosz Białkowski - Millwall.

The only player who is still active is Polish goalkeeper Bartosz Białkowski, who plays for Championship side Millwall -  but is out of contract this summer and leaving. 

He started between the sticks when Southampton won at The Den earlier this season, courtesy of a late, late Ryan Fraser goal.
