Southampton City Council has now explained the reasons for the road works on the bridge on Friday.
A spokesperson for the council said: “We are undertaking trial holes to investigate the nature and depth of services within and around the bridge structure.
"The results of these investigations will aid us in the planning and efficiency of the Itchen Bridge Maintenance Project works when they take place later in the year.”
