A new Tesco store is set for Chandler's Ford despite concerns from residents about its alcohol licence.

Eastleigh Borough Council's licensing panel approved an application by Tesco for its new store at 103 Bournemouth Road, Chandler's Ford.

The licence gives permission for the store to sell alcohol between the hours of 6am and midnight all days of the week.

It also allows the store to provide late-night refreshments between 11pm and midnight.

The company says it will operate a Think 25 policy, with all employees receiving training on the organisation's policies, systems and procedures.

But despite this, the application was met with concerns by some residents who claimed the new licence would lead to anti-social behaviour in the area.

Les Bowering wrote: "As this is a residential area, I really don't think there is a need to be selling alcohol from 6am to midnight.

"I am sure that will attract trouble and noise to those who live in the vicinity."

Local resident Hilary Blaker said on the council's planning portal: "This is a residential area with ample pubs in close proximity which shut at a suitable time.

"Individuals will leave the pubs when they close and make their way to this location to continue their drinking.

"Due to it's close proximity to the bus stop for Southampton this licence will result in individuals drinking until midnight and then attempting to travel to Southampton via bus.

"Waiting at the bus stop will not be a quiet activity."

But Tesco said it will have a CCTV system that covers the premises with images retained for 31 days.

A member of the management team will also be on the premises all the time the store is open, the company added.

"This colleague will have responsibility for the premises and will be the initial point of contact for any issues that may arise.

"The company has a “good neighbour” ethos which seeks to ensure that the premises plays an active part in the local community

The application was approved by the licencing panel on Friday, May 10.
