PLANS to bring an Ikea store to Southampton have sparked a huge reaction from Daily Echo readers.

As revealed in our pages, the Swedish furniture giant is poised to launch a bid to build a superstore on the former Pirelli cable works in West Quay Road near the city centre.

The move would bring 500 jobs to the centre and become a mecca for design savvy shoppers looking for cheap quality furniture.

Business and city leaders have backed the proposals which have also brought a flood of responses from Echo readers.

While some are concerned at traffic congestion caused by the tens of thousands of shoppers the store would attract, many welcome the boost to the economy and chance to raise the profile of the city.

It is Ikea's third attempt to open a branch in Southampton.

Plans will be on display at the Bargate monument in the city centre, from Thursday until Saturday.
