HAMPSHIRE Cricket wicketkeeper Tom Burrows has gone into bat for a local law firm.

The professional cricketer is studying law alongside his duties at the Rose Bowl and has joined Southampton legal firm Paris Smith & Randall.

The 21-year-old aims to qualify as a solicitor by 2012, which will give him another career after he hangs up his gloves.

Today he plays alongside giants of the game such as Australian Ashes hero Shane Warne and swashbuckling England batsman Kevin Pietersen in the Hampshire squad.

Tom, who is understudy to club wicketkeeper Nic Pothas, works three days a week with Paris Smith & Randall, while studying for his law degree at Southampton Solent University.

He returns to full-time cricket duties from spring to the close of season in September.

With five innings under his belt, he boasts a high score of 42 and an average of 21.

Like many professional sportsmen, Tom has been encouraged by club bosses to take up a career in case of injury or early retirement.

He said: "I had always been interested in pursuing a career in law, but thought that I wouldn't be able to commit to studying without it being detrimental to my cricket commitments.

"It was a surprise to find out how flexible university and vocational study can be, and Paris Smith & Randall has been ever so supportive. I hope to do them proud."

His appointment further strengthens the 140-year-old cricket club's links with the firm, who advised them during the building of the Rose Bowl and the new floodlights.
