ISLE of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel has appointed the first female commander of a vessel in its 146 year history.
Nicola George, 27, has worked for Red Funnel since 2002 and has just been appointed commander onboard Red Jet 4 - Red Funnel's fastest high-speed catamaran.
Nicola, who lives in Southampton, takes on the responsibility for commanding the vessel, navigation and managing the crew.
She started her three-and-a-half year cadetship at sea onboard the Royal Mail ship, St Helena. During her cadetship Nicola has worked on various vessels including the QE2.
Nicola said: "This is a long-established and well-respected company with strong heritage and an exciting future - I'm proud to be playing my part in it."
Tom Docherty, managing director, said: "We're delighted to have Nicola as our first female commander. She brings excellent skills and experience to the team."
