FASHION chain River Island is to quit its High Street shop in favour of WestQuay shopping centre.
The clothing and lifestyle brand is to take over the current New Look shop in the centre, when the budget brand moves into the old Waitrose store on the ground floor.
The store is anticipated to open early 2008, but it is unclear what will happen to River Island's prominent High Street shop.
In the last three months, WestQuay has signed Pret A Manger, SumoSalads and Julian Graves, New Look and now River Island.
Andy Collyer, general manager for WestQuay, said: "The last few months have been immensely exciting for WestQuay, refreshing our offer and visitor experience.
Our aim has always been to ensure that whoever acquired the former New Look store should provide our visitors with inspiring, fast fashion, and River Island fits the bill."
Ian Rothwell, city centre manager, said competition for the soon-to-be vacant high street spot would be fierce, adding: "It's a prime space.
I'm sure it will have retailers queuing up."
