THE New Forest has confirmed its position as one of the UK's top tourist destinations after scoring a double triumph in the industry's annual oscars'.
The Chewton Glen Hotel, New Milton, and the Cottage Lodge, Brockenhurst, are among the winners in the 2008 Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, which were presented last night.
The Chewton Glen was named large hotel of the year and the Cottage Lodge scooped a gold award in the sustainable tourism category.
Hugh Taylor, chairman of the VisitEngland organisation said: "The awards highlight the rising quality and diversity of holiday experiences on offer in England.
"From food gems and unique attractions to magnificent hotels and sustainable B&Bs, England is an exciting world-class tourism destination in which to discover something new.
"We are proud to honour the people who play a vital role in encouraging visitors to holiday in England."
The judges described the Chewton Glen as a five-star country house and spa that displays excellence at every level."
They added: "All bedrooms and suites have been individually designed and decorated to provide the ultimate in luxury and comfort with unique antique furnishings and contemporary textiles.
"The hotel is also committed to the environment. In addition to introducing energy saving measures, the Marryat Restaurant offers a variety of dishes made from fresh, local produce."
The Cottage Lodge is a bed and breakfast establishment housed in a former forester's cottage built in the 17th century.
The judges said: "The lodge strives to reduce its waste, pollution, carbon and environmental impact.
"All breakfast ingredients are supplied from the Forest and Fair Trade products are used where no local ones are available. Rooms are cleaned with environmentally friendly products and the owners encourage wildlife into the garden.
"The lodge also works creatively to educate guests and offers tea and cakes to anyone arriving by train."
