A GIANT new store dedicated to all things outdoors is to open in Southampton, creating 45 jobs.
When it opens on May 20, Go Outdoors will have a five-metre high climbing wall, pictured, and a 20,000 square foot area dedicated to tents among other specialist sections.
The 32,000 square foot store opens in place of the former Trade Depot site on Third Avenue in Millbrook and is likely to provide stern competition for existing city outdoor sports retailers.
In total GO Outdoors will offer 20,000 lines covering walking, cycling, fishing, climbing, running, horse riding and skiing.
It’s a far cry from the chain’s early days as the Camping & Caravanning Centre in Sheffield, 40 years ago, and staying in the northern city until a management change in 1998 spurred an expansion drive that has seen it spread across the country to the stage where it now has 21 branches.
Store manager Kevin Fricker said: “Southampton is the perfect place for the new GO Outdoors store.
“With camping firmly back in fashion and the Isle of Wight Festival just around the corner, we have everything thrill seekers require.
“We are looking for staff who will be as passionate about the great outdoors as we are and who can encourage our customers to explore Southampton and enjoy the range of activities on our doorstep.”
