Today Western Esplanade in Southampton bears little resemblance to how it looked at the early part of the past century.
Back then people would stroll along the promenade and boatyards looked after and repaired yachts and dinghies.
However, gradually land was reclaimed from the water and the outlook changed dramatically.
Houses were built in the area but it was susceptible to flooding, which caused damage to homes, pubs and hotels along Western Esplanade.
Except for the city walls all evidence of earlier times has been swept away.
