ANYONE looking to get into the Christmas mood in style this year need look no further than Tylney Hall.
The Hampshire hotel launched its festive fayre menu last week, and while it only comes round once a year, it's certainly worth the wait.
My first visit to the countryside retreat was on a sunny spring day a couple of years ago, but arguably it looks even better lit up and decorated for Christmas on a cold winter's night, complete with roaring fire.
The Victorian mansion is steeped in history with elegant features, and certainly provides the perfect setting to escape the cold and immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit.
This year’s menu features both much-loved classics and some new additions, so my wife and I aimed to sample a variety of dishes.
My celeriac soup, accompanied with a fig bread roll, was a winter winner, in contrast to Lucy's light and delicate smoked salmon starter.
For mains I chose the pork belly, a dish I rarely choose, but this was brilliant. Succulent meat that wasn't too fatty, served with creamy mash potato, mushrooms and a side of fresh vegetables.
Lucy’s roast turkey was also a fine choice, with the crisp, fluffy roast potatoes the highlight.
For dessert, it had to be Tylney’s orchard apple and berry crumble tart, with crème Anglaise. A lovely alternative to traditional Christmas pudding.
Rounded off with mince pies and coffee in the comfortable lounge area, it's a festive treat.
The menu is available until December 23, from £34.50 per person for lunch and from £44.50 per person for dinner.
