Assuming control of a mafia outfit and taking over a crime-ridden city is normally the premise for an all-action first or third-person shooter, but in Omerta: City Of Gangsters, it's strategy, simulation and tactical turn-based combat that brings this deviant world to life.
Taking the role of a fresh-from-the-boat immigrant, with dreams of the big life, you must work your way up the criminal hierarchy of 1920s Atlantic City. Starting with small jobs, you'll recruit a gang and expand your empire by taking territory from other gangsters, to the point where you eventually establish your own crime syndicate and become the de facto ruler of this world.
It's an excellent perspective on the genre and delivers a progressive single-player experience that will keep you scouring the city for your next big deal.
What it may lack in hardcore combat, it more than makes up for in simulation opportunities, levelling up and strategic gameplay options. It's the thinking man's mafia fun.
