All be it a good game, Resistance 2 was never going to be the PS3 exclusive shooter to rival Gears of War 2 and Halo 3. But Sony’s latest blood-bath shooter, Killzone 2 is a truly promising challenger and provides PlayStation 3 owners with something to be truly boastful of.

Killzone 2 takes place 2 years after the invasion of Vekta by the Helghast that was portrayed in the first game. Players take control of a human special-forces operative named Sev in a bid to capture the Helghast leader, Emperor Visari and stop the war.

One of the things that Killzone 2 does best is to create a futuristic war zone that really puts its player in the thick of the action. Bullets fly over your head, explosions tear through the air and danger lurks around every corner. Good use of cover is essential at all times The graphics are some of the best seen in any first person shooter and the weapons, which there are plenty of, feel both brutal and powerful when shot. All this helps to immerse the player in this deep, dark and gory game.

The AI is fantastic as the enemy will often move to different cover instead of poking their head up where you have already been shooting, which is something that happens far too often in games.

Lots of attention has obviously been given to the online aspect as the customisation options are vast and the fluidity of the gameplay is immense. And if you need some practice before joining some cold-hearted online killers, there’s an option to do battle against bots.

This is clearly a high point for gaming in 2009 and for the PlayStation 3 console in general.
