After already being available for a couple of years in Japan – the international version of White Knight Chronicles has finally landed upon our shore.

First things first – character customisation. There’s more aesthetic customisation options for your character than you could shake a uniquely crafted finger at. But the avatar you create is not the main character of the story, more of a sidekick that views things from a distance. It's a uniquely interesting perspective for an RPG.

The graphics both in game and in the FMV sequences are beautiful and it’s because of this that White Knight Chronicles becomes so hugely compelling, regardless of the fact that the storyline is hugely cliché.

Combat takes place by controlling just one of the characters in the squad, and although the events are in real-time, there’s a certain time period to wait before the next move can be executed. The move can be anything from an attack to a spell, just so long as the character has previously learnt it from the extensive skill tree. The move can even be a previously created custom-combo.

But to me the one major chink in White Knights armour is in the combat – it’s just too easy.

One of the most interesting features and the one time that your avatar is thrown into the limelight is when it comes to online play. Players can team up with other gamers to engage in the side quests available in almost an MMO type fashion.

Considering that there’s both a thin MMO and a rich single-player RPG – there’s great value for money here.
